Apropos of a week that began with Passover and will end with Easter.
Sometimes a traveller needs a place of quiet solitude.The Field Chapel is a project designed and executed by the students of an Advanced Design/Build Studio at the Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture in Chicago for a ecumenical church co-operative in Boedigheim, Germany. The task of the design was to create a place of spirituality… as “an interdenominational chapel, a space for people who are in a search for God–a place for quiet reflection, but also one that welcomes hikers and cyclists who appreciate a rest stop that has a sense of beauty.”
The project is sustainable:
The design itself was based upon using donated, renewable and local materials. With the exception of the steel used in the fastening screws and column anchors, all materials come from locations within 40 km from the site.

as a building it has a simple beauty

i am always slightly amazed
about the need to enter a built structure
in order to commune with
whatever the Big Thing is
that is our reason for being
i find that woods and fields
and even city streets
work just fine
[although i have no idea what the Big Thing really is]
